NYTimes and more to come
Due to a few busy weeks and a very time-consuming project, I have been pretty lazy about updating. There are some new images in the galleries and more to come very soon, but for now here are the past few weeks of NYTimes regulars:
Left to right – Road stories from business travelers, high-end hotels rebounding, time limits on how long airlines can leave passengers sitting in planes, and more about electronic conferencing.
Science this week was about why certain music notes sound pleasant to some and painful to others, and last week was on mice and their response to the smell of cats.

Idea Sandbox icons
Some people think being an illustrator is a cool job, and it is, for sure. So who does an illustrator meet that makes him say “wow, you have an awesome job”? Paul Williams of Idea Sandbox, that’s who. Paul is a professional brainstormer. Yep, he helps companies when they’re stumped, stymied, in a rut, or just plain dry. His job is to spark the creative processes, and he’s damned good at what he does.
I was contacted by Paul last year to do some icons for his newly redesigned website. An illustrator and a professional brainstormer can kick ideas around all day, and we did, kicked them around for weeks in fact. We started with two basic approaches – sandbox-themed icons and light bulb-themed icons. And there were countless pages that looked like this:

And after much back and forth, which was actually fun with Paul, we decided on the sandbox theme (the flying book was for a separate page within the site that was unrelated to the main directory):

I was happy to hear from Paul earlier this year to do a batch of four icons for some new content on the site. Once again, we had at it, back and forth and back. We resurrected the light bulb sketches and additionally I proposed a spokescharacter named Fil:
Fil may still have a future at Idea Sandbox, but for now we went with the bulbs:

New work in the blog
There’s lots of new work to be added to the galleries, including this spot about sleep anxiety. For now the blog has some new assignments starting with a series of icons for Idea Sandbox. Thanks for looking!
