NYObserver and WSJ Covers

Here are two cover assignments from the past couple of weeks. The first one was for The New York Observer, for a feature about women looking for hunky country dudes at farmers’ markets. Here are some of the rejects (is that a carrot in your pocket, lady?):

1

I almost never do cartoon line drawings anymore but it seemed like the right feel for this one. And even though I still can’t believe they picked this, here is the cover that ran:

2

About two years ago The Wall Street Journal asked me to do a Lichtenstein-style treatment for a spot which lead to this cover last weekend:

Thanks to Ed, Lauren and Mark for both assignments!

Forward cover

It was very exciting to get a call for a Forward cover. As you can see here, it’s a great lineup of illustrators to be a part of! The package was about the future of the housing market and the end of the McMansion era. Basically, housing is coming back, but it’s in smaller construction and closer to cities. Here is the cover:

Harvard Business Review cover

Last month I got a call to do a small illustration for the cover of the Harvard Business Review. The idea was simple – to have a lion tamer/business man interacting with the typography. I sent a bunch of variations and these two got cut right at the end:

Here is the final spot:

And here is the cover:

And then, about a week later, they called me back and asked me to to give them two additional keyframes for a simple animation for the iPad edition:

Super fun assignment, thanks to Karen and James!

Penultimate post of 2011

Here are a few jobs from the past month…

This was a section opener for American Medical News about legal help for doctors when online reviews cross the line into defamation:

1

So it turns out that the Border Patrol, responsible for busting gun-runners and drug-smugglers, are in fact running guns and smuggling drugs, according to this cover story for the Phoenix New Times:

Cover 12.1_F.indd

And here is the latest Wisdom Circle for AARP The Magazine, this one about a woman who can’t let go of the anger she feels toward her ex:

3

Science Times from two weeks ago was about how dolphins waddle under the weight of pregnancy; this next one was about people with grapheme-color synesthesia – the kicker is that we weren’t sure if there would be color on the page that week so the illustration couldn’t rely on it, that was a head-scratcher:

4

The NYTimes Biz Day spot last week about alliance airlines and how you never know who will be flying the plane regardless of what your ticket says:

5

For Remodeling Magazine, a story about how a quick personal response can satisfy an unhappy customer:

6

And finally a quick one for the Saturday Wall Street Journal about how best to complain to retailers in order to get your way (I thought for sure it was going to be one of these “squeaky wheel” sketches):

7b

But we went with a parody of Lichtenstein for more graphic punch (to which I would add that I did this with absolute love and admiration for one of my favorite artists):

Thanks to Jennifer, Peter, Joanna, Peter, Joe, Mary, and Mark (and Roy)!

Miami Herald Biz Cover

Last month I did a Monday Business cover for the Miami Herald about how to measure the value of a tweet. This was a pretty easy one and I sent these ideas over:

TWITTER_SK

I was happy that they chose the jeweler’s loupe, but then I realized it was going to be pretty tricky to turn the iconic Twitter bird into a gemstone:

TWITTER_COLOR_COMP

They were on board with the color comp so it was on to finals:

TWITTER_PREFIN

This is about mid-way through the final process. The treated lines are finished and the background has been set. The bird was a separate drawing which was fitted into place in Photoshop. And here is the cover as it ran:

Thanks to Chris!

Dallas Observer cover

Here is my third Dallas Observer cover, on the newsstand now:

DO_FINAL

The feature is about suburban teens using “cheese”, a cocktail of cold medicine and black tar heroin. Sometimes they bag it and sometimes it’s packed into pill casings, which was how we originally comped the cover (it turns out that in the ‘burbs of Dallas, they bag it):

Thanks to Alex, all-around great guy and AD.

Phoenix New Times

I took note of some great PNT covers this past year and I was very pleased to receive a call to do one. The story wasn’t in yet and they weren’t certain of the direction it was going in – I just had to run with the idea that there’s this clinic, and they use this futuristic head-gear for their diagnostics, but it’s sort of pseudoscience-y, and they think everyone has Lyme’s disease. Medical, futuristic, pseudoscience, ticks – here was my initial batch of sketches:

PHX_SKS_1PHX_SKS_2

They liked the digital mapping tick-man, the DaVinci and the circuitry sketches, but asked if I would develop the circuit idea more. The next day I sent these, which I was happy with and thought for sure I was closing in on a winner:

But after a discussion with the writer, it turns out that the DaVinci was closest to the mark for the tone of the article. Here is the final cover:

Thanks to Pete at Phoenix New Times for being a great AD and a lot of fun on the phone.

Dallas Observer cover

Here is the March 10 Dallas Observer cover for a feature about an EPA scientist who is taking the local government to task on toxic waste:

TOXIC

The art director (one of the greats) came to me with the idea of doing a satire based on the Toxic Avenger movies. Not my usual thing, and in fact I don’t know when the last time was that I did an illustration with this much drawing…I usually try to solve the problem with as few elements as possible, but this was too good to pass up. The Dallas Observer covers are always smart and fun and graphic and I’m proud to have this second one under my belt. Here is a link to a grid of past covers to check out:
