August 2012

Here is a quick roundup of some recent editorial work…

This was my first assignment for Worth, a magazine that been on my top 10 for some time (in fact, I’ve crossed a few names off that list this summer). The article was about how to handle your kids’ allowances:

1

The article was asking if they should work for the money or if contributing to the household is just part of being in a family. But, for the final, they work hard for the money:

2

This little series accompanied a back page piece for New Jersey Monthly about one day in traffic court:

3

Here is the page:

4

This spot for Golf Digest was for the Basics column. It talked about hitting down hard on the ball to pop it up:

5

This was the first illustration I’ve done for Macworld in a couple years and it was good to get back in there. The article was about Mission Control, the new desktop clutter manager for Macs:

6

Here is a recent spot for Science Times about how hummingbirds alter their flight in rain (you read more about this spot and other from Science here):

7

Here are the past four weeks of the Business Day spots for the NYTimes – more airline fees, complaints from hotel customers, and two for consecutive columns on the mess over who is sitting where on planes:

8

And finally, one outside my usual slot in Science Times for some how-to spots for arthritis sufferers:

9

This month I will be making some much needed updates to the site, so I apologize now if the galleries are a little mixed up over the next couple weeks.

Thanks for looking, and thanks to all the ADs here – Pam, Greg, Doug, Rob, Peter, Joe and Phyllis!

Newish work, Part I

I took some time off in August, which was nice, and even put off updating the blog so that the Times video could have top billing for a few weeks. But, it’s time to get back to it, so here is the first installment of newish work…

For the NYTimes Book Review, a piece about a woman with Alzheimer’s accused of murdering her neighbor:

1

For Golf Digest, a spot on how nerves can ruin your swing mid-game:

2

For the Wall Street Journal, for an article about the ripple effect of corn on the rest of the agribusiness market:

3

For Replacement Contractor, a spot about promoting one of your salespeople from the field:

4

For New Jersey Monthly’s dining issue, a sidebar spot about the backlash when changing a restaurant’s menu:

5

And one more for the NYTimes Education Life section, for a story about changes to the GMAT:

6

Thanks to Nicholas, Doug, Dan, Pete, Greg and Shannon! Check back next week for a big update on Science Times.

NYT, WSJ, NJM

A quick one for The Wall Street Journal last week about how to calculate the tax benefits of converting retirement funds to Roth IRAs:

ROTH

Science Times has been testing my brain for the past few weeks…first, how the structure of the placenta determines how long the gestation period is, and bio-inspired aviation:

Quick aside here – I have been working at texture for a while, trying to get it right, and it’s coming together finally…the drawing is still done with paper and ink, but the trick was how to make the digital color look less digital. Here is a detail, I think it’s just about there:

And finally, a very fast turnaround with New Jersey Monthly for a column in which the writer went on about how he loves our garden state:

How Santa gets down the chimney

Just a short while after the ghost map, New Jersey Monthly called me to illustrate a full-page holiday comic about how Santa gets down the chimney.   They knew pretty much what they wanted in each panel so it was just a matter of drawing it.  Sometimes these jobs are more challenging because when it’s your own idea you deal in images that work for you, but this came complete with art suggestions for each panel included in the copy.   I do love Santa Clause, as a concept and graphically (here are some pics from my workspace), so I gladly accepted.

There were only a few minor tweaks here and there and then on to finals:

Merry Christmas to me!

Throwing out the first pitch

This started a year ago, in front of the tv, while watching Ghost Hunters. I don’t even know why I watch that ridiculous show, but I do, and they were in NJ, so, you know.  I ended up with a handful of sketches by the end that eventually made it up to my desk and then in to my projects file, periodically evolving from doodles to a series of spots and finally into a map of NJ’s most haunted locales.  This past summer I finished a color comp, patted myself on the back and promptly put it away because despite being determined to finish it, I had no real plan beyond that.   And then, within a week or two, New Jersey Monthly called me to do a quarter-page for a story about the governor’s race.

Ding.

I had never pitched an idea before.  And I didn’t exactly have a long relationship with NJ Monthly to rely on, but a couple of weeks after that first assignment, I sent them my proposal – here was my chance, I had an ‘in’, Halloween was around the corner, it all seemed to make perfect sense, so along with an informal note I sent this:
